Co-Director & Lead Artist, Red Earth
Red Earth is a UK-based group directed by artists Caitlin Easterby and Simon Pascoe creating original site-specific work in response to the landscape: reinterpretations of archaeology, geology and the environment, connecting past, present and future, activating landscape, experience and memory.
Red Earth events are unique experiences bringing a landscape to life: temporary structural installations and performances incorporating physical movement, live sound, fire, public participation and the weather.
Red Earth work is:
• Environmental: exploring the transient landscape: focusing on issues such as coastal erosion and climate change.
• Cross-cultural: we work with international artists, combining local heritage with diverse cultural perspectives making bridges between cultures through international dialogue.
• Site-specific: inspired by place and created on-site using local, natural materials and traditional methods to create contemporary sculptures.
Performances happen across the landscape, charging it with the unique atmosphere of a participatory ritual. Red Earth events make connections between land and people, symbolic journeys between the invisible layers of the landscape.
We work with artists, archaeologists, geologists, ecologists, historians, farmers, animals and communities bringing people together in participatory events to explore their natural and cultural heritage, transforming our understanding of the places where we live.
Red Earth’s most recent performance was Enclosure: a journey across Hambledon Hill, Dorset, the largest Neolithic Enclosure in Europe.
We are currently discussing Lithograph: a performance journey to Stone Henge with Professor Tim Darvill, and with archaeologist Doctor Matthew Pope a ‘reopening’ of Whitehawk Neolithic enclosure in Brighton on the Sussex coast.
For WAC-6 Red Earth lead artist Simon Pascoe joins with the archaeological community to create a ritualised journey across the campus grounds: an ancient response to a contemporary landscape activated by fire, live sound and participation; an atmospheric sensory experience allowing an insight into the liminal world of our ancestors.
