Gerard Byrne works primarily in film and photography, which he presents as ambitious large-scale installations. For the 52nd International Venice Biennale, Byrne presented a number of new works, including *ZAN-*T185. Commissioned specially for Venice by Culture Ireland, and titled after microfilm numbers in the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the piece reconstructs six interviews with budding actors, (c. 1973). The work was shot on location at the New York Theatre Workshop with acclaimed cinematographer Chris Doyle, and was produced by Ali Curran. Also in the exhibition is the ongoing photographic project A Country Road. A Tree. Evening and the video and photography installations 1984 and Beyond and Hommes à Femme (Michel Debrane).

Biography

Gerard Byrne (b. Dublin 1969) studied in New York and was awarded the prestigious PS1 studio award in 1997-8. His work has received significant attention internationally, and has been presented at the Tate Triennial (2006), Istanbul Biennial (2003), the Whitney Museum of American Art (2003), New York, and MUMOK, Vienna (2006). Major solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at the Frankfurter Kunstverein (2003), and the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2002) and most recently at the Kunstverein Düsseldorf.. Known for his skilful interweaving of historical narratives to form new takes on the present, he works primarily in film and photography, which he presents as ambitious large-scale installations. He lives and works in Dublin
